Disana’s unisex organic boiled wool jacket is made of finely processed boiled wool. It has a large hood lined with organic cotton that matches the shape of the child’s head, pockets (also lined in cotton), and large tagua nut buttons. It comes in a rainbow of colors that are available with matching accessories.

FIT: This jacket has a boxy cut and runs large; it is wide in the chest and long in the back. It is designed so regular clothing can fit underneath and also makes it easy to layer wool for warmth. I appreciate how the back is curved and long to fully cover the hips and bottom area and keep any cold drafts off the back. Especially with as much bending and squatting that children do. My son will easily get two years wear out of this jacket. For this winter I cuffed the sleeves but for next year he will probably wear them uncuffed. The hood is big enough to use with a hat while still being snug to keep the wind out.
COMFORT: I wasn’t sure how rough or thick this jacket would be as I had no prior experience with boiled wool. I was very pleased with the softness, and it is thin enough that it can be used safely with a car seat. The neck and hood area is lined with matching organic cotton so the wool is never directly against the skin. Boiled wool is almost entirely windproof while balancing hot and cold temperatures, and it transitioned very well from cold outdoors to warm buildings.
DURABILITY: This jacket was used from fall through the spring as my son’s primary jacket for errands and trips and it never showed any wear or dirt. It was not used for outdoor play, although I do not think that would have affected the durability, only the frequency of laundering.
EASE OF CARE: Boiled wool requires very little care. If the jacket did get dirty it was very easy to shake out or brush off. After 5-6 months of continuous use it never had an odor and never showed any signs of uncleanness. I did, however, hand wash it (see How to wash wool) in order to store it for the summer and was amazed at all the dirt that did wash out. If it is your child’s primary play jacket you may have to wash more than once a season.
CONCLUSION: This is an excellent option if you are looking for a car seat safe jacket or an outdoor play jacket than can be layered to suit various temperatures. It can be purchased here.
- Lightweight and safe for car seats
- Organic wool and cotton minimizes your child’s exposure to chemicals
- May last a few winters with the generous size
- Easily able to layer underneath
- May be too roomy and bulky if your child is on the slender side
Disana Organic Boiled Wool Hat
CONCLUSION: The Disana organic boiled wool hat has the same properties as the jacket and comes in matching colors. It is fully lined with organic cotton and is tied underneath the chin to keep it securely on the head while covering cheeks and ears. The cut is very low so it provides full coverage and warmth. The tassel on top adds a little whimsical flair. My 2.5 year old is wearing the size 2-5 and although it is roomy it still fits well and I expect to get a few more years use from it. It can be purchased here.
