Chasing Windmills merino was launched by a husband-wife team, who after the birth of their twins, wanted to ‘capture the adventurous spirit of childhood through the natural goodness of merino wool.’ Their merino products range from blankets and bedding to clothing up to size 8T. Their ZQ Merino wool is sourced from the finest New Zealand and Australian ranches who meet the highest standards of animal welfare, environmental care, and social sustainability. As stated on their website “the merino wool used in our collection is naturally super soft, breathable, and lightweight — truly an ideal fabric for little ones all year round, and especially as the seasons change.”
For this review I tested the All-Season Hoody and the Boy Shorts.
FIT: My son is wearing a size 2-3T hoody, which in my opinion, runs large. He has a long torso so I did not exchange it for a smaller size because I wanted the length. I had originally purchased the shorts in size 2-3T but I exchanged them for a 4-5T to give him a little bit more room. I would say they probably run true to size, depending on the build of your child and how you would like them to fit. I expect both items to fit for another year or two. The shorts have one back pocket and a draw string in addition to the soft supportive elastic waist. The hoody has a front pouch pocket as well as thumb holes on the sleeves and does not have a drawstring for the hood.
COMFORT: Chasing Windmills merino is very soft and does not pill. They do have tags on the inside of their garments but my son has never complained about them and they do not seem like they would be irritating. Both items did a wonderful job of keeping my son warm and comfortable while he played in the early summer ocean water on a windy evening, even after they got wet.
DURABILITY: My son has worn these at the beach, hiking in the woods, and after an afternoon at the pool and they have performed wonderfully. I will update this review at the end of summer after they have gotten more wear.
EASE OF CARE: After our trip to the beach they were wet and full of sand and after our hike the shorts had gotten dirty from wet logs and mud. In both instances they cleaned up as good as new with a little wool wash and stain remover. (See How to remove stains from wool) The care instructions on Chasing Windmill’s site says to machine wash cold with a mild detergent and either tumble-dry low or air dry. I washed mine by hand and then air dried them.
CONCLUSION:
- Wonderful customer service and free shipping for size exchanges (US only). If you have any issues with your order or garments you will get a response back from Sarah or JP, the founders
- The drawstring on the shorts is not very long and gets pulled into the short when put on. I have provided Chasing Windmills this feedback and they are addressing this issue. If you needed the drawstring you could easily add a longer string, although the elastic waistband is sufficient without the drawstring.
- Easy to care for and does not pill
- Chasing Windmill’s Merino can be purchased here at their site.
