Merino wool is certainly an investment, especially for quickly growing children, so I am always looking for brands that are durable and cost effective. I had heard positive things about WeeWoolies and was eager to put them to the test for myself.
Started by new parents seeking to share the benefits of merino wool, Weewoolies was the first Canadian designer and manufacturer of merino clothing and sleepwear for children. They use one of the worlds best merino sourced from the purest alpine environment of Southern New Zealand. Their wool is ZQ™ merino wool which ensures environmental, social and economic sustainability, animal welfare (non-mulesed) and traceability back to the source. Their merino is also Bluesign® approved fabric, which is processed without exposure to chlorine or harsh chemicals and is made with non-toxic dyes ensuring a completely natural product through and through.
I received a base layer and zip sleeper in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own. (This post may also include some affiliate links for your convenience, click here to read my full disclosure policy)
FIT: Both the kids and the baby line run fairly true to size. The long cut of the shirts, as well as the cuffs on the sleeves and pants allow extended wear as the child grows since the cuffs can be folded and then unfolded. I have found the fit to be snug and form fitting which is good for sleeping and layering. They are available in a 2 piece set size 1-10 yrs, a zip sleeper sizes 0-24 and a coordinating beanie in a variety of bright, unisex colors. They also recently came out with summer jams, a tank and short set in sizes 2-10.
COMFORT: This merino is silky smooth and at 195/gsm is it a perfect year round weight and versatile both for cool and warm weather. The zip sleeper has a snap tab at the top to protect little chins from the zipper and all garments have flat locked seams for added comfort. They do have a size/care tag but it could be easily removed for children that are sensitive to tags.
DURABILITY: Both my children have worn their Weewoolies several times a week for a few months and I am extremely impressed with the durability. There is no sign of wear on the cuffs (one of the first places I usually see wear) and even with crawling the zip sleeper still looks great. The only sign of wear is a small snag from the sleeper zipper on the bottom.
EASE OF CARE: Weewoolies are machine washable on gentle cycle with cool/warm water and tumble dry low or air dry. Air drying the merino will help to prolong the lifespan. Wash with natural detergents and avoid fabric softeners which can coat the merino and make it less effective in managing moisture and temperature regulation. I have only hand washed and air dried and both sets never experienced any pilling. (See How to wash wool)
CONCLUSION: The durability, softness, and the quality of WeeWoolies merino is a brand I can easily recommend. The fact that these garments are carefully produced by a small family business using socially and ethically responsible methods is certainly an added bonus. WeeWoolies can be purchased on their website.
